Bits and Pieces

Was I the only person cracking up at one luscious moment in last night’s 60 Minutes interview with Barack and Michelle Obama? They were remembering the crappy car Barack had when the couple started dating, and his general level of poverty at the time. “She didn’t marry me for my money,” the president-elect goes. Then, immediately, a cut to

US-POLITICS-VOTE-BUSH-OBAMA

And my first thought is, “And obviously Laura did marry George for his, because why else would she end up with a dopey, alcoholic fratboy?” Now, I know that’s a nasty reflection on our First Lady, and I don’t mean it that way. Rather, as a nasty reflection on Dubya. But the reaction was so immediate. And was it the one CBS planned on with that seamless juxtaposition, or am I just too partisan and cynical for my own good?

Interesting article by the UK outfit Media Lens at Dissident Voice. It recounts some of the media hoopla over Obama’s election and its supposedly hope-inspiring significance, while suggesting the reality will be less than earth-shattering. Basically, as they quote Ralph Nader saying, we’re getting the same ol’ corporate, empire-building leadership we have had before, from both Dems and Repubs. A few media types have not swallowed the hype, but they are few and far between. One interesting point – Rahm Emanuel is a hawk on Israel; not surprising given his ties (he was born there), but a little surprising to me because I had never heard or read anything about his foreign policy views. Will he be Obama’s “Jowlin’ Joe” Lieberman on the Middle East? Not that I think Emanuel wants to bomb Iran. But we’ll see where Obama goes in that part of his foreign policy.

And finally, a comment from the pride of Mississippi and the sage of the Republican Party, Haley Barbour, at last week’s meeting of Republican governors, as reported by Politico.com: “As for this year, Barbour argued there was a way to defeat Obama – by rendering him unacceptable to American voters. ‘And the McCain campaign did not choose to try to make that argument,’ he observed.”

Yeah, because saying he’s a socialist who pals with terrorists and doesn’t see America like you and me and wants to force kindergartners to get sex ed; and putting a press release on your website that says “Barack Obama’s friend tried to kill my family,” all that just makes him so acceptable. What would Barbour have done? Said Obama was at that meeting in Prague with Mohamed Atta? He was the second gunman on the grassy knoll? He eats seitan (“You know how you pronounce that, don’t you – Satan.”)? My god, I don’t want to see what making him look unacceptable will mean in 2012.
